Day 249--Fifty Dead Men Walking

I have to admit that I wasn’t up to speed about the topic of this movie before seeing it. I saw the previews at one point and decided that it was a movie that I wanted to see. The preview showed a Jason Statham Transporter type adrenaline with a gritty, in-your-face type of cinematography. While the movie is slickly produced, it shows a country in turmoil when two sides try to kill each other and the government that tries to intervene.

The movie follows a petty Catholic conman (played by an excellent Jim Sturgess) in Northern Ireland who gets arrested and convinced to infiltrate the IRA (Irish Republican Army). The intricacies of the movie are loosely based on a real story about someone that is still being hunted by the IRA.

Not knowing the history of Northern Ireland and the conflicts that did/still strife that country, I was taken aback by the similarities of gang-violence in America. Can someone hate some so badly because they are members of an offending group? Is the common enemy the government that tries to keep them from killing themselves? With the factioning of American society, is this movie the harbinger of what is to become of America?

There is plenty of action, intrigue, and suspense to keep this movie interesting. You don’t have to know about Northern Ireland to appreciate the movie. The movie is subtitled in English if you are afraid that you might not understand the thick accents.

Put this on your Netflix queue because it definitely is worth a viewing and it will translate well to the small screen.

I rate this movie two watches.
