Day 239--Inglourious Basterds

It’s always difficult to evaluate a Quentin Tarantino film. He seems to be one of those directors that you either love or hate. Of course, for me, this is one of those times.

There are many aspects of this movie to like. I like the rewriting of history (e.g., the plot). More importantly, I love all of the technical aspects of his movie. If you ever want to be a film director, you must watch the oeuvre of QT. The camera angles alone are worth the price of admission. Another aspect to love is the tongue in cheek/satire/parody that find their way into his movies. Finally, QT always has a way of getting the best out of his actors. While Brad Pitt’s screen time was too limited for my tastes, the acting of Christoph Waltz (the character of Hans Landa) was worth every minute.

There a lot of aspects to not like about this movie. Everyone dies and unfortunately, for me, you see every single agonizing aspect of their death—from every angle and multiple times. Not being a fan of slasher movies, it was simply too much for me. One of the truly annoying aspects of the movie is the very loud soundtrack. When the action of the film is at a standstill, the soundtrack blares out of the speakers—unnecessarily so.

If you like QT films, you will love this movie. Regrettably, I don’t. While most of the film seems like a repeat/reworking of action from his numerous films (Kill Bill series, Grindhouse, Pulp Fiction), there is enough to like in this film.

I rate this film one watch.

  1. Dear Dr. Russ,
    Very nice to meet you.
I was on the set until the sun came up.
Are you going to tell everyone about your star turn?
PS: I don't have your email, hence this in the comments.
