The biggest problem with the movie Funny People is that it can’t decide what it wants to be. Should it be a movie about the frailties of stand up comics or should it be a movie about death and dying and the effects it has on people—including the dying person. Unfortunately, the movie tries to tackle both issues and fails miserably.
Don’t get me wrong—there are flashes of brilliance in this movie, notably by Adam Sandler. The movie is funniest when he is doing stand up. Granted, most of the humor is sophomoric—bathroom type humor. Some of the funniest parts of the movie are the home videos of a young Adam Sandler that are incorporated in the current film.
The low point of the movie is the bad acting of Eric Bana. While he tries to play an over-the-top jealous husband, the characterization just doesn’t work because it simply isn’t believable. Although, I enjoy Bana as an actor, this just isn’t his movie.
The ending of the movie is predictable, maudlin, and expected. Rather than let the audience contemplate the capriciousness of fame, friendship and loneliness, the movie tries to tie up the pieces and then ram them down your throat.
I rate this movie three watches.
