Day 187--Hurt Locker

There are some films that will define a period in American history. Now, as the United States enters into another era of fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, the movie that will define our presence there will be Hurt Locker. Vietnam had its Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, and Apocalypse Now. The Iraq war now has its defining movie.

I have to admit that I was drawn to the film by the presence of Ralph Fiennes and Guy Pearce. I could go on forever about both of these phenomenal actors. Unfortunately for me (but not for the movie), these actors play very minor roles in the movie.

The movie is a fictional account of a bomb disposal squad in Iraq. The angst, joy, fear, grief, isolation and camaraderie of these men is shown and developed as they fight a war they are ill-prepared to fight, work in a land where they are not wanted, and live in fear of every person with whom they interact.

I was not familiar with any of the actors portraying the three main characters. Someone that gives a gritty and noteworthy performance is Jeremy Renner. He definitely should be remembered come Oscar time. Anthony Mackie gives a great performance as well. Brian Geraghty, a local NJ actor, gives a splendid performance too.

This is a must see for people who enjoy insightful political commentary (without being beat over the head), great acting, superb suspense and action, or are opposed to our military presence where it doesn’t belong.

This movie is rated zero watches.
