I actually saw this movie on Wednesday when it opened in NYC. I saw a 3:30 pm performance thinking that I would be able to see it before all of the kids would drag their parents to the movie. What I failed to realize was that school is out for the summer and the kids had nothing better to do than watch the movies.
I was very pleased to see the movie at the Zigfield Theater which is one of the last remaining old-time movie theaters. In NYC, they still hold movie premieres there.
In my defense, I did not read any reviews before seeing the show so I wasn't privy to any of the criticisms or reviews of the movie; also, I did not see the first movie so I didn't really know what to expect. Truth be told, I was hoping to see a naked Josh Duhamel and I recently lusted over Ramon Rodriguez (who I had just seen in The Taking of Pelham 123). Also, whenever Julie White is in anything--I'm there.
In short, I really enjoyed the movie. Granted, it isn't an Oscar contender for any of the acting awards. It should be an Oscar contender for many of the technical aspects of the movie. The movie is BIG, LOUD, and BRASH. Just what we should expect from a movie destined for the consumption of tweens.
Keep in mind, this is a movie about machines that transform into metal warriors to save the planet Earth from their out of space, and deep sea, enemies. We should expect some licenses to be taken with the plot; similarly, we should expect some gaps in explanation. Why? Because most kids, just don't care.
As for some of the criticisms of the movie (racism, being the loudest), I always regret when adults apply adult mentalities and analysis on kid's movies. We should return to our inner child and just enjoy the movie for what it is--a CGI action movie spectacle.
